Dream: Cancun beach house with self-destructive monkey creatures

With family on vacation — somewhere with a beach, I think Cancun. They all went to the beach, I’m in this house that we are renting. Oskar is with me. Opening a gift that’s for my sister because I need something that will work for a shoelace for my boot. I use a bright red ribbon. Discover that inside this tiny little package are many massive miraculously folded-up curtains and hanging lamp shades and draperies, etc., all very intricate, huge, many colors, expensive woven & patterned fabric… I hang them all around the room — hoping that if I impress her with this she will not be mad that I opened her present.

I hear someone coming up the stairs. Somehow I know that these are the monkeys. But, when they come in (walking more or less like people, upright, calmly, silently) they are unlike any monkeys I’ve seen. Hard to describe. Long hair, very furry; silent; black eyes; shark-like teeth. They are silent — at first they seem like they might be intelligent, but actually they are extremely primitive. Possibly blind or half-blind. They seem not to understand anything, including themselves…

They look at their fingers as though for the first time — mysterious things. They break them off, to hold them in their hands and study them. One pulls out his teeth — not one at a time, but the whole bottom row, as though they were false teeth but they’re not. Just holds them, studies them. There is a sort of tooth-shaped pocket of skin hanging out of the mouth, bloody — sort of like the teeth were a limb, and when the bones were removed the skin now hangs there limp…
